Curves [geometry for the older 3 Rail track]

Hi Newbie here,

I have just dragged my 3-Rail from the loft after being stored for about 55 years and have decided to resurrect it again. However having been out of touch for decades I am confused about the diameters of different curves. I have about 24 curves (all the same) and I want to add some inner or outer sections but I am unsure of the geometry of what I believe are 4 differing diameters and need to identify the type I already have (i.e. 1st -2nd- 3rd-4th). Can someone point me in the direction of the sizes that were manufactured for the various rack sectons.

Hi i have a hornby dublo 3 rail layout and it has 3 loop but they are not perfect loops but have no problems 

there only size 2 curves that can make a double running loop and they are EDA1 15" curve and EDA2 17"curve It is possible to make other loops but you will have to add or cut other track pieces

A half straight inserted in four places (N E S W) in a circle will give approximately a circle at standard track spacing outside a normal circle.

interesting thread this.  As many of you know, i have 3 rail layout, and there are as described full curves large and small, both of which i have set up.  There were however, even larger radius curves, which were painted red, underneath.   They may have been a trial item, but i have 6, which are  definately Horny Dublo, but have never been able to find others. They join happily to dublo track, so whether they were i limited sale, i know not.

interesting thread this.  As many of you know i run a large 3 rail layout, and apart from the 2 curves listed i have 6 others, even longer. These are painted red, on the underside . They look exactly the same and join to all other track,. Whether these were trialed at some point and then withdrawn, i know not.

Interesting, These so far as I know, are not mentioned in the Foster history of Hornby Dublo, but would have been extremely useful,

These larger curves may have been especially commissioned for exhibition layouts including the likes of Hamleys and Gamages........HB

I have seen people make larger curves by cutting a 15" curve in certain places and opened it up to making larger curve

that could account for red base. Have never been able to find  any extra ones.  On another note the new Dutchess of Atholl   is interesting, as i have the Hornby Dublo one, which i bought in 1970. Runs as well today, as it did them.

I have a Duchess of Montrose than is at least 60 years old only needed a service and a new magnet

Yes I still have my 'Athol' it is part of a set with LMS carriages.

 

A picture of those extra large radius curves would be very interesting.

Did Marklin make three Rail track, similar to the HD track, before moving to stud contact?
