Developing Hornby far and wide.
As many of you will be aware we have had a few changes here at Hornby some of which will temporarily effect Engine Shed. Recently Engine Shed has been released every four weeks but until further notice the publication date will now be the last Friday of the month. Hopefully this will not cause too many concerns amongst those who look forward to reading the latest information from Hornby and the development team but as they say, ‘Needs must when the Devil drives!’
Since the last Engine Shed we have received a good number of preproduction decorated samples of such diverse models as the W1 and the BR Mk1 RB coaches. We have also received a running sample of the Class 91 and some first assembled tooling shots of the APT, plus engineering samples of the Coronation coaches. And finally to finish with, a surprise addition to the Hornby International range.
In many respects this month’s Engine Shed is working on the fact that a picture is worth a thousand words but it must be noted that other than the W1 and the BR Mk1 RB coaches, what you will see with the Class 91n APT and the Coronation coaches are still very much work in progress and consequently are certainly not the finished item.
BR Mk1RB coaches
The description and the history of these coaches has been well documented in the Hornby 2020 catalogue (See page 156). There has been a change to one of the coaches shown in the catalogue and that is the BR Southern Mk1RB which is now numbered S1765.

LNER Class W1 (Hush Hush)
One of Hornby’s star models for 2020 and the images say it all. A stunning model with the rather austere grey and looking strangely in keeping on such a powerfull looking locomotive and shown in the images with and without the ‘British Enterprise’ nameplate. Even though the loco never received the LNER Apple Green livery the Hornby representation of the promotional image does make a stunning example of one of Gresley’s finest creations.

BREL Class 91
Once again the Hornby 2020 catalogue provides excellent information (See page 128) concerning this East Coast Mainline Class 91 locomotive which entered service towards the end of 1988.
Hornby’s first running sample of the Class 91 model was received recently and first impressions were and are quite favourable. There are of course the inevitable tooling modifications required with some tolerances requiring attention but in general the first tooling shots of the model are very encouraging as the images do show.
BR Class 370 (Advanced Passenger Train)

Introducing our latest development.. ..the New and exciting A.P.T. set..
The Advanced Passenger Train in its futuristic livery is British Rail's latest step forward in rapid Inter-City travel and Hornby are right up with them. The unique tilting bodies provide stable and comfortable travel for both BR and Hornby passengers even on existing track with its curves and switchbacks. The articulated coaches and long wheel base bogies are all accurately modelled by Hornby and the diecast bogies on the power car ensure optimum performance from the Ringfield motor powered from the track. The driving trailers also have lights which operate in the direction of travel.
The above is taken from the Hornby 1980 catalogue announcing their rendition of the revolutionary Advanced Passenger Train which had entered service in that same year. Due to the prototype’s troubled operation, linked to the dramatic shrinkage in demand for model railways, Hornby declined to invest in the remaining carriages and even though several thousand sets and train packs were sold within a six year period, mainly due to high stock levels of the train pack, the tooling for the Hornby model was never used again, eventually being scraped. Fast forward nearly 40 years and the 21st Century incarnation of the Advanced Passenger Train – Prototype is fast taking shape with the first running samples and test shot of five of the vehicles being received at Hornby.
For first shots they are exceptional. Of course work needs to be carried out on the tooling and as with the Class 91 this does mean closer fitting parts (see corridor end image – NDM car) and an increased tightening of the tolerances but first impressions provide a very positive vibe of things to come.
LMS ‘Coronation Scot’ coaches
Just missing inclusion in the last Engine Shed the images shown are three first running samples of the forthcoming LMS ‘Coronation Scot’ coaches and for good measure we area also featuring the livery artwork for each coach. Again I must stress that the models shown still require tooling tweaks and changes before production can commence, however even in their plain moulding state they do look quite impressive.

ARM 3806 C38 Class 4-6-2 ‘Pacific’ Express Passenger Locomotive – Non-streamlined
Australian Railway Models (ARM) announced at the Australian Toy & Hobby Show in Melbourne last March their intention to produce an ‘H0’ scale C38 Class 4-6-2 ‘Pacific’ . Having had a long and mutually beneficial association with the directors of ARM, Hornby were able to secure the distribution of the C38 model for both mainland Europe and the UK.
As the packaging states, ‘The C38 Class locomotive was commissioned for the New South Wales Government Railways to eliminate the expense and complications of double heading express passenger and mail trains on the demanding line between Sydney and Albury. Designed and built in Australia the locomotive boasted an impressive 200 tonnes and up to 2500 horsepower.
The first five locomotives were constructed by Clyde Engineering of Sydney. Each locomotive featured a streamline design that was considered fashionable to attract passengers during that time with the first locomotive appearing in January 1943.
After a successful introduction, the second batch of 25 non-streamlined locomotives were ordered in 1943, the even numbers built at Eveleigh with the odd numbers being built at the Cardiff, NSW workshops. The first non-streamlined locomotive rolled out in November 1945. The late 1950s saw the rise of the diesel locomotive and the loss of the prestigious passenger duties for the C38s as they went on to haul mixed freight. 1962 saw the beginning of the C38 withdrawal from service with the final C38 withdrawn in December 1970.
The C38 is often seen as Australia’s most successful steam locomotive ever… a true Australian icon.’
To accompany the C38, ARM commissioned Hornby to reintroduce three exLima TAM coaches for the Australian market with a quantity of each coach being made available in Europe and the UK

Family Fun Project v.2
This month we have been thrilled to launch various new projects and partnerships.
