BR Era 6
In 1967, British Railways changed their livery to Rail Blue with a double arrow logo, ushering in a new diesel era and even a few electric locomotives. Despite the new look, the way BR numbered the locomotives stayed the same, so this is known as the Pre-TOPS era.
This era also saw the end of steam locomotives.
BR Total Operations Processing System (TOPS)
The TOPS system of numbering locomotives came from the Southern Pacific Railroad in the USA. BR adopted this computerised system at the end of the 1960s, adapting the system to better fit the UK requirements. This marked the beginning of era 7.
