What’s so special about ‘Black 5’s?

As one of the most numerous and long-serving classes of British steam locomotives, the Stanier Black 5's are held in high regard by railway enthusiasts. Almost 850 Black 5's were built between 1934 and 1951 and they stayed in service until 1968, when British Rail steam operations finally came to an end.

These locomotives could do it all – they hauled express passenger trains, heavy freight and were responsible for local services. They looked the part too, with a simple, elegant design created by William Stanier. The tapered boiler and clean lines were key characteristics of this reliable machine.
