Hornby: A Model World is back with a brand new second series on Yesterday channel starting Monday 16^th January at 8pm, with all episodes available for catch-up on UKTV Play.

In this series, Britain’s best loved model making company, home to four iconic brands, Hornby, Airfix, Scalextric and Corgi, opens its doors to reveal how their dedicated team of designers strive to shrink a new generation of mighty machines. From century old steam engines to cutting edge racing cars. In each programme we’ll follow the process from drawing board to perfect mini replica, with visits to see the real giants along the way. We follow the ups and downs of the design process as they attempt to get the all-important detail spot on whether it’s perfecting the sound of a luxury 1940's steam loco or the shape of a rally racing car.

The Hornby team try to model a legendary steam locomotive, the 9F, and produce a unique Scalextric replica of Mr Bean’s mini.

A4 Mallard

Classic locomotive Mallard is the inspiration for Hornby’s latest project as the team battle with the challenges of a new scale, an epic garden layout and a live steam demonstration.

Black 5

Designer Phil takes on his toughest challenge yet - revamping the entire Black Five class with 842 variations, as new recruit Millie cuts her teeth on a state-of-the-art rally car replica .

Spitfire

At Hornby, the Airfix team attempt a large scale replica of the iconic Spitfire Mark Nine. And Designer Phil tries to make the heaviest model loco the brand has ever produced, the Turbomotive.

Simon and Montana attempt the hard sell at a unique trading event, whilst designer Steve takes on the challenge of replicating the complex make up of one of the world’s newest trains.

In the new series, musician and TV presenter Jools Holland (episode 2) allows cameras into his Kent home to marvel at his incredible train layout. He’s played to millions on stage but few know of Jools’ passion for model making. With a love of architecture, Jools has collected models and kits of curious buildings for the past 45 years.

Elsewhere in the series, music producer Pete Waterman (episode 4) creates his most ambitious layout to date - recreating the section of West Coast Mainline where he spent his Saturdays as a child.

Each programme follows Hornby’s design process from drawing board to perfect mini replica, charting the ups and downs of the journey as Hornby’s team of dedicated designers attempt to get the all-important detail spot on, whether it’s perfecting the sound of a luxury 1940s steam loco or the shape of a rally racing car.

Cameras also capture some of Britain’s best model layout builders, creating miniature masterpieces in lofts and sheds across the land. These dedicated enthusiasts spend hundreds of hours building perfect replicas of towns, villages and landscapes for their locos to travel through, everything from wintry wonderlands to bomb damaged city scapes.
