What is Digital Command Control (DCC)?

Digital Command Control (DCC) is a digital operating system for model railways. It allows multiple locomotives to be independently controlled via Bluetooth simultaneously, regardless of where they are in your layout. To operate a DCC system, you need a DCC controller.

Which is the best DCC controller?

Hornby’s latest release in DCC train control is the HM7000, which enables users to digitally operate their locomotives and digital accessories via the HM7000 smartphone app. If you’re looking for a traditional model railway DCC controller, we recommend Hornby’s Elite Digital Controller.

All Hornby DCC controllers, including HM7000, can operate any gauge or scale, whether it's OO, TT or N gauges.

How does DCC train control work?

In a DCC system, each locomotive is fitted with a decoder which receives digital signals sent from a DCC controller. These signals carry instructions specific to each locomotive, such as start, stop, speed, direction, and even operating lights or sounds.

Because the signals are uniquely addressed, multiple locomotives can simultaneously operate independently on the same track. This level of control and interactivity significantly enhances the realism and complexity of model train layouts.
