Welcome to another edition of Engine Shed which features the first shots of the LNER Coronation Coaches and the EWS Business Train Pack decorated samples. We celebrate the Model Shot of the Year 2023 winner and the runners-up and tell you all about Warley where you can meet our team and ask any questions you may have!

LNER Coronation Coaches First Shots

First samples of the much-anticipated LNER Coronation Coaches are now in Margate for us to examine. We must thoroughly scrutinise all parts and fit them back together to check the build is correct. This stage of development allows us to see the mouldings produced by our factory in China and is a particularly exciting moment of the project as months’ worth of design time is brought to life in plastic for the first time.

Given how extensive and complicated this tooling suite is, the quality of these first samples is generally good. All the parts fit together well and although there are minor defects with the moulding quality, these are simple to correct with the refinement of the moulding conditions. The main area requiring improvement is the finish of the windows which should be clear rather than how they appear in these images. Although this may seem to be a major issue, it only requires the window sections to be polished in the tool. This is not usually done until later in the engineering process in case tooling modifications are required.

Just a reminder about the couplings for these Coronation Coaches: magnetic couplings will connect the twin coach sets on the central articulated bogies.

EWS Business Train Decorated Samples

Decorated samples for the EWS Business Train Pack have arrived at Margate. The Class 67 locomotive, No. 67002, has its respective Mk2 coaches that incorporate the running numbers of 3255, 3318, 3279, 5959, 9531 and 6139. As a big caveat, please note that the EWS livery is wrong in terms of the placing of the yellow stripe with the “EWS” and “67002” legends. It seems to have been inverted on this sample and this error will be corrected. This is all part of the development process. Please find below images of the 67002 ‘Special Delivery’ locomotive and a Mk2F Second Open (SO) coach with the running number 5922.

Pre-order your EWS Business Train Pack to be one of the first to get it.

Model Shot of the Year 2023 Winners

We are delighted to show off the best model snaps from the winner and runners up of the Model Shot of the Year 2023 competition. All the entries conveyed a creative flair but there could only be one winner, chosen by social vote.

Winner – Jesse Sim

Congratulations to Jesse Sim on winning Model Shot of the Year 2023! Jesse Sim weathered the Hornby Class A1 ‘Knight of the Thistle’ to incorporate a new running number and name: No. 2576 ‘The White Knight’. He further weathered the model to suit a Northern locomotive that operated in the south. He also fitted a Niu Models water feed gear.

Runners Up: Jack Cutmore, Thomas Nowell, Mrs Alexandra Heaven-Wright and Jack Wisnia

Congratulations to the runners up of Model Shot of the Year 2023!
