An Island ‘Terrier’

Welcome to this month’s edition of Engine Shed, the only monthly update from within the Hornby development team.

This month’s edition features a glimpse at the first decoration sample of the Isle of Wight Central Railway ‘Terrier’ No. 10 locomotive and a look at our new Skaledale buildings perfect for completing your model world.

Isle of Wight Central Railway ‘Terrier’ No. 10 Decoration Sample

The A1/A1X 'Terrier' class were designed by William Stroudley to haul commuter trains on the heavily congested lines in South and South-East London, as well as operating through the Marc Isambard Brunel designed Thames Tunnel. A total of fifty locomotives were constructed between 1872 and 1880. No.10 was originally known as No. 69 ‘Peckham’ and was the eighth ‘Terrier’ to be constructed in 1872 and was in service until 1936.

Our decoration sample offers us a real glimpse into the final production model but as always, please note that what you see here is not the finished version.

A rich Crimson Lake type of livery has been well executed on this decoration sample. You can see the legend of ‘10’ on the cab sides and ‘Isle of Wight Central Railway’ in gold on the body sides.Image-2-860-x-450.jpg

When looking through the open sided cab, you can see an immense amount of detail has been applied to the cab interior. There are a series of rivets lining the top of the cab and this sample has incorporated four circular windows which are characteristic of the ‘Terrier’ as a class.

Image-4-860-x-450.jpgWe move on to a bird’s eye view of the locomotive. The two lines of rivets incorporated into the cab roof can be seen in much closer detail below. There is a single chimney at the front of the locomotive, while the steam dome and whistle can also be seen. There is extensive detailing on the handrails.

Image-5-860-x-450.jpgThe two rear circular windows can be seen in greater detail above the coal bunker, where coal detail has been applied. A lamp bracket also rests on the coal bunker. No 10 is emblazoned on the rear of the chassis between the two buffers.

Image-8-860-x-450.jpgThe smokebox door and dart can also be seen in much greater detail, with emphasis on the chimney and the legend of No 10, also at the front of the chassis.

When we tested the engineering sample on the development track, it ran smoothly around curves. This remained much the same for this decoration sample too.

Coronation Coaches Progress

In our last Engine Shed edition, P2 Steam Generator: A ‘Chuff’ and then a ‘Puff’ we shared images of our new LNER Coronation Coach running samples.

For an in depth look at the full rake running on the track and the progress on the project so far, you can watch a video of the designer, Sam, here:

New Arrivals

We have a great selection of new buildings available now to add to your layout! From a GWR focused diorama to a countryside layout, these Skaledale buildings can be used to enhance the detail further. Unleash your imagination and model to your heart’s content.

GWR Lamp Room and Private Office Pack

The pack incorporates two buildings: a private office and lamp hut reminiscent of the Grouping era, particularly on the GWR main line.

Image-9-860-x-450.jpgThe first building included in this pack is a lamp hut. These buildings were small structures that were used to store signal lamps and other supplies including lamp oil. Lamps were utilised to illuminate signals and station buildings at night time or when there was reduced visibility. It was an essential part of railway safety.

Image-10-860-x-450.jpgThe second building in the pack replicates a private office for clerical staff that could be found at most railway stations on GWR routes during Grouping from 1923 to 1947.

R7379 Derelict Farm Building

Image-11-860-x-450.jpgThis derelict farm building is a perfect match for any countryside diorama. Farm buildings are ubiquitous on British rural routes. We have a wide selection of grass materials that could be used as a field next to the track, onto which you can include this building to enhance the scenery.

‘New Arrival - The impressive ‘Black 5’

The newly tooled, LMS ‘Black 5’ locomotive numbered 5200 with a coupled tender is available now!

Image-12-860-x-450.jpg

The model features a flickering firebox for enhanced realism and directional lighting with front and rear lights on the locomotive and the tender. Regarding the lamps, the headcode formation is set up as Class H through freight train. However, additional lamps are included in the accessory bag for setting up other lamp codes if desired.

Message from the Team

Our team recently took a trip to the Derwent Valley Light Railway in Murton, where we were thrilled to present York Normandy veteran, Ken Cooke, with his very own Rowntree & Co. No. 3 88DS model.

Glynnis and Tony Frith, the owners of the preserved locomotive, also received their own models. It was a wonderful and memorable day for all in attendance.
