What was the Silver Jubilee train?

The Silver Jubilee train was introduced to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and ran from 1935 to 1939. The train was made up of seven coaches pulled by one of four specially chosen locomotives. These were:

  • 2512 ‘Silver Fox’
  • 2509 ‘Silver Link’
  • 2511 ‘Silver King’
  • 2510 ‘Quicksilver’

The silver and grey A4 trains ran between London Kings Cross and Newcastle, running once per day in each direction. Their average speed was 67mph, which was impressive for the time, maintaining that speed even uphill.
