Here are our top picks to help you choose a Christmas gift for that special someone.

The ideal starter: GWR High Speed Train Set (R1230M )

If you’re buying for someone who’s new to model railways, the GWR High Speed Train Set is a brilliant first step into the hobby.

Inside the box, they’ll find stylish green motorised power car, coach and dummy cars, along with everything else they need to get started: a controller, power supply, an oval of track, and a scenic mat to help plan their layout.

It’s easy to set up, fun to run, and a wonderful way to spark a lifelong love of model railways.

A true Hornby icon: Hornby Railways B.R. High Speed Retro Train Set (R1289M)

For some, the lure of model railways lies in its nostalgic appeal, which is why the High Speed Retro Train Set is such an iconic product for modellers looking to return to their childhood hobby. Re-released a few years ago, this is one of our most-loved sets.

This set has everything needed to build and operate a working layout straight out of the box, including an oval of track, controller, and power.

The train itself is made up of a motorised power car and dummy car, with a coach, replicating the famous Inter-City 125. It’s the ideal gift for anyone who is just starting out or returning to the hobby.

For the realist: Diesel Mixed Freight Train Set (R1292M)

If your loved one enjoys the working side of the railways, the Diesel Mixed Freight Set is a fantastic choice.

This set celebrates the era when diesel power took over Britain’s freight network, hauling everything from coal and ore to fuel and building materials through the countryside. It features a ‘Satellite’-liveried diesel shunter with three wagons: a Bates Fuels tank, a Gilbert DeChant ore wagon, and a Richards & Cronin box van.

It’s perfect for those who love the look of industrial trains or want to build realistic freight operations. And because Hornby models are part of a complete system, this set can easily be expanded with more track, wagons, and accessories when they’re ready to take things further.

For the classic enthusiast: Flying Scotsman Train Set (R1255M)

When it comes to iconic locomotives, nothing tops the Flying Scotsman — the world’s most famous steam engine. This stunning set recreates the glamour of 1930s express travel, when the LNER and LMS competed for speed and prestige on the route between London and Scotland.

Inside the box, you’ll find a ‘Flying Scotsman’ locomotive with three coaches, a starter oval of track with an additional Track Pack A, controller, scenic mat, and re-railer to easily place your train on the track.

Every detail captures the magic of this legendary locomotive, finished in its distinctive apple green livery. This set makes for a beautiful and meaningful gift.

For the speed record lover: Mallard Record Breaker Train Set (R1282M)

If your special someone is drawn to stories of engineering excellence, the Mallard Record Breaker Set will make their day. This sleek blue locomotive still holds the world record for steam train speed at 126mph.

Hornby’s set celebrates this icon of design and innovation with a beautifully detailed model of the Mallard itself, plus three coaches. It includes everything needed to start running straight away, including a controller, track, scenic mat, re-railer, and an accessory pack for added realism.

A show-stopping gift for anyone who loves speed, style, and the golden age of steam.
