History
The ‘Princess Coronations’, also known as ‘Duchesses’, were the ultimate LMS express locomotives, built to the design of William Stanier. Thirty-eight of them entered service: the first in June 1937 and the last not until May 1948 under the auspices of British Railways. Twenty-four of the class carried streamlining, which was removed from 1946 onward, but 6233 wasn’t one of them, having been built in conventional form and entering service in July 1938.
It was fitted with a double chimney in 1941 and, in 1946, received smoke deflectors, becoming BR 46233 in 1948 before withdrawal in February 1964. It is preserved at the Midland Railway - Butterley and has been a regular operator on the main line. The model depicts ‘Duchess of Sutherland’ in as-built condition, prior to being fitted with a double-chimney in 1941.
