Frequently Asked Questions

Discover everything you need to know about Hornby TT:120.

What scale is TT?

TT scale is 1:120. This means that each model is 120 times smaller than the full size example.

Why should I pick ‘TT’ over ‘00’?

The size of the Hornby TT:120 makes it ideal for those who may not have space in abundance, or may wish to do more with the same amount of space. 6x4ft is often stated as the minimum space required for a good size ‘00’ layout, whereas 3’6” x 2’6” can provide space for a reasonable ‘TT’ layout.

If it’s a space thing, why should I not model N gauge?

N gauge is smaller still, and while it may have some advantages the size gets to the point that is can be restrictive in terms of the detail that can be achieved. N gauge can also be quire fiddly in terms of assembling trains and building kits.  It is also a size that does not lend itself for youngsters to get involved with.

Will you be making more locomotives and what will they be?

While we cannot share details of forthcoming products, Hornby TT:120 is here to stay at Hornby with at least 5 years of products planned. Hornby :TT120 is a largely untapped market in British outline, and as such there is plenty of scope for models to be made. It is an exciting time to begin modelling in this scale.

Is this the end of Hornby ‘00’?

Not at all. The Hornby TT:120 and Hornby ‘00’ markets are largely separate and we have no intention of abandoning one scale in place of the other. It is simply a question of space.

I have a Triang TT set from the 1960s, can I use these on the TT:120 system?

Due to limitations at the time, Triang TT was not made to the standard 1:120 scale but was instead 1:101.6. As part of an effort to create a universally compatible system as possible we have created this new range to the internationally recognised 1:120 scale, so the old Tri-ang system is not compatible with the new and exciting Hornby TT:120 system.

Can you repair my Hornby TT:120 locomotives? I have had an accident…

Our repairs team are able to take a look at faulty or damaged locomotives, in order to arrange this please email technicalservices.uk@hornby.com

Why can I only buy Hornby TT:120 direct?

With a new scale comes a new approach. This break from tradition will ensure that as the range develops Hornby will be able to receive direct input from those modelling HornbyTT:120. This input will, as time progresses help mould the range to the requirements of those using the system, especially if those involved are part of the Hornby TT:120 Club.

Is Hornby TT:120 compatible with products from other current manufacturers of 'TT'?

Yes, 1:120 is the universally accepted scale for ‘TT’, as such Hornby TT:120 is compatible with other ‘TT’ ranges currently available on the market. Hornby TT:120 locomotives and rolling stock have NEM standard couplings and will connect to other ‘TT’ railway brands produced to 1:120.

Why should I join the Hornby TT:120 Club?

Members of the Hornby TT:120 Club will benefit from enhanced Hobby Rewards points on all Hornby TT:120 purchases, as well as receiving a useful quarterly magazine and other Hornby TT:120 themed goodies.

Is TT:120 suitable for my young child?

While TT is a smaller size than ‘00’ and providing there is sufficient adult supervision, the minimum age is 14 years, Hornby TT:120 is suitable for young children.

Will TT work with HM6000 or other brand controllers?

Yes, despite its smaller size Hornby TT:120 locomotives use motors that have the same electrical specification as our larger models. The HM6000 system is compatible with the Hornby TT:120 system as well as other leading analogue controllers.
