Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Engine Shed! This special edition includes an update on the progress of the BR 9F as well as a look back at 2021.

The Class 9F 2-10-0 locomotives were designed by Robert Riddles and constructed from January 1954 to March 1960 at British Railways’ Crewe and Swindon Works. Two hundred and fifty one 9Fs were built. The 9F was one of the most powerful steam locomotives produced by BR and was intended for fast, heavy long distance freight. The 9Fs were designed to be capable of hauling trains of up to 914 tonnes at 35 mph with maximum fuel efficiency.

Riddles 9F locomotives were the last of the BR Standard Class steam locomotives and designed to have service lives of 30 years being the last of their kind before dieselsation and electrification. Class 9Fs were unnamed apart from the 999th BR Standard to be constructed and was named ‘Evening Star’. This locomotive was to work passenger trains with great success throughout the 1950s and its name was chosen from suggestions gathered by a BR Western Region competition with the naming ceremony taking place at the Swindon Locomotive Works on the 18th March 1960.

Many of the Class were scrapped but several 9Fs escaped destruction with six being restored to working order. No. 92220 ‘Evening Star’ is now part of the UK National Collection and is on display at the National Rail Museum, York.

The first Hornby 9F model was produced by Tri-ang Hornby in 1971. Over the years the original 9F model has been changed, modified and improved, however to keep pace with the demands of today’s modeller it was decided to retire the old and bring in the new.

The 9F project has been steadily progressing throughout this year.

Hornby Class 9F models will incorporate diecast bodies and the Flickering Firebox feature.

In February Engine Shed presented a series of preliminary CAD images of various tenders suitable to be paired with the 9F. The new Hornby Class 9F will have 5 main types of tender, which are as follows.

BR1B: This tender featured the standard water tank with a capacity of 4725 gallons but had a coal partition limiting coal to 7 tons. This was the tender fitted to the majority of 9Fs.

BR1C: This tender bears similarities to the BR1B, however the partition is placed further back in the coal bunker allowing for a capacity of up to 9 tons of coal.

BR1F: The largest of the tenders, featuring higher walls to accommodate 7 tons of coal while making room for a larger capacity water tank. This design was most commonly used in BR’s Eastern Region.

BR1G: The tender fitted to the first and the final batches of the Class 9F and the preferred tender of the Western Region. The stepped upper section resulted in greatly improved visibility enabling tender first running.

And finally, tender BR1K incorporates a lower water capacity but allowing much greater coal capacity, along with a fitted mechanical stoker feature. These tenders were only fitted to locomotive numbers 92165-92167.

These images can be compared to the current December sample:

Alongside renders seen in the Engine Shed in March was the first stereo 3D printed sample of a generic 9F:

Message from Montana

What a year 2021 has been – full of ups and downs for many reasons and we can only hope that we see more light in 2022! From a Hornby model railways point of view we have had another busy year, from the 2021 range launch, to seeing the arrival of our brand new entry level range of model railway toys, Model Shot of the Year, the Hornby Christmas Grotto, the Hornby: A Model World series and so much more! Be sure to remain tuned in this year, as we have SO much more planned which we simply can’t wait to share with you.

Christmas 2021

We hope you have all had a fantastic Christmas and are enjoying the festive season with your loved ones. Thank you to everyone who has sent us photos and videos of their Hornby gifts – keep sharing them with us by emailing marketing@hornby.com for the chance of being featured via our online platforms. Here are few a few that we have received!

We can see the festive fascination in Noah’s eyes as he watches the Santa’s Express chug around the base of the Christmas tree.

It seems that Malcolm received the perfect gift for him!

5 year old Joseph had his Christmas wishes fulfilled with the GWR High Speed Train Set!

Karl’s wife surprised him with the Tornado Express Train Set, which was inspired by the enjoyment from watching Hornby: A Model World.

What a present! Hunter’s new locomotive sitting in front of the Christmas tree.

After receiving Harry’s Hornby wishlist last month, we were thrilled to grant one of his wishes and even more thrilled to learn of just how happy it made him.
