Coronation Sensation

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Engine Shed. In this edition, we will take a close look at some interesting renders of the forthcoming LNER Coronation Coaches as well as our new, Hornby Dublo train set.

The Coronation coaches were stock designed and implemented on the LNER service of the same name, beginning on the 5th July 1937. The train was short lived with the service ceasing and the stock placed into storage at the outbreak of the Second World War. The coaches would be pulled by specially prepared Class A4 locomotives.

The Coronation coaches were fitted with lights throughout, and this is no different with the model version with accurate temperate LED lights powered from pickups on the bogie bearings on all coaches providing subtle lighting for the detailed coach interiors, useful for illuminating the fully detailed interiors. A concealed capacitor will ensure the lights do not flicker.

The coach sets will be connected via magnetic couplings on the central articulated bogies, allowing the streamlining affect to remain in place during running.

The new Hornby LNER Coronation prototypes have an array of intricate detailing on both the inside and outside of the coaches, replicating as closely as possible the intricate detail of the full size prototypes. To do this we will be employing some cutting edge techniques not used on Hornby models before and we wait with eager anticipation to see the results.

It is worth mentioning at this point that we are in a more advanced stage of development than the CAD models shown at GETS a few weeks ago as seen in the cabinet below. Also visible in the same cabinet are the forthcoming updated 4-VEP and new liveries for the Class 91 and Mk4 DVT.

With one of the surviving Observation Cars based at the One:One Collection Museum in Margate it goes without saying that it has been extensively surveyed over the course of the project, with every inch of the coach measured and replicated in CAD design.

With such access, we have been able to produce the CAD design to take into account all variances and rebuilds and therefore we will be able to produce variants of the Observation Car in the future.

Definitive Dublos

Over the last few days we have received a great number of pre-production samples and amongst them was the one set we all were anxious to see and that was the Hornby Dublo ‘Royal Scot’ set.

A model train

We of course had already seen a printed box but this was the first time we had received a completed set and what an impressive package it is. Both the tray and lid are produced in rigid card with the traditional Hornby Dublo faux fabric blue print finish with a picture of the distinctive young boy centred on the lid, with excitement in his face at the array of Hornby Dublo locos and rolling stock in front of him.  Lifting the lid gives that satisfying vacuum resistance feel which just oozes quality and once the lid is off the contents are there to be see in all their glory. The Hornby Dublo ‘Royal Scot’ train set – for some a true homage to the those halcyon days before mobile phones, 24 hour television and the internet.

This set includes the BR liveried Princess Coronation Class 46232 ‘Duchess of Montrose’, plus two ex-LMS coaches, a Composite and a Brake 3rd, with the contents mirroring that as included in the original set. One of the only differences between this set and the original is that the original set included three rail track with the locomotive equipped accordingly, a system discontinued in 1964 having first being produced in 1938.

Before closing there has been some discussion as to the lack of a controller in not only this set but also the two Tri-ang Remembered sets. It must be remembered that in the days when these specific sets were introduced controllers were not included and therefore to keep the contents as close to the original sets as possible it was decided that to include them would be contrary to the intended spirit of each of the sets.

The world’s most famous locomotive ‘Flying Scotsman’ makes a special appearance at London’s Kings Cross Station.

What better way to kick off the first event for Flying Scotsman’s centenary than displaying the iconic locomotive at Kings cross for everyone to see and enjoy?!

As the lead sponsor for the Flying Scotsman centenary, in partnership with the National Railway Museum, we were thrilled to be at Kings Cross from the 14-16th October where we had a stand on the concourse and displayed our Hornby TT:120 layout for the first time, held a competition and above all spent the full weekend talking to customers, visitors and passers-by.

In conjunction with the start of the centenary celebrations, we were thrilled to launch a range of limited edition Flying Scotsman models to specifically celebrate the journey so far of Flying Scotsman! Our new models were released under the Hornby Dublo brand name and each locomotive features a diecast body, 5 pole motor, enhanced livery application and body detailing, fully detailed cab, kinematic tender connection and 8 pin DCC socket. We also launched a celebratory four-wheel coach for those after a small momentum.
