A trip down memory lane

The legacy of The Beatles lives on long after the Fab Four finally hung up their guitars in 1970. Despite splitting up 55 years ago, the band is still one of the most famous in the world. With 20 number-one singles in America, 18 number one singles in the UK and 12 albums in the UK, plus multiple compilation albums and box sets, The Beatles really defined the mood of an era.

And now they are adorning model railway layouts around the world. Whether you’re a fan of the rock band or not, there’s no denying our latest models feature attractive liveries that stand out on a busy railway scene.

The latest Beatles arrivals

Last month saw an influx of Beatles wagons rolling into the Hornby warehouse. These latest designs celebrate The Beatles Anthology, US album covers and a ‘Yellow Submarine’ Tanker Wagon. With bright, colourful designs, iconic artwork, and instant recognisability, these are real collector’s items. Let’s take a closer look at them.

The Beatles Anthology

This sub-collection features Anthology, Anthology 1, Anthology 2, and Anthology 3. The Beatles Anthology was a multimedia project created to capture the history of The Beatles. It included a television documentary and three double albums.

The TV series came out in 1995 and was watched by over 27 million viewers. Meanwhile, the double albums were made up of bootleg tracks, some of which had never been heard before.

These wagons display some of the world-famous Beatles images of the anthology period.

US Album Covers

These wagons feature album cover artwork from ‘Meet the Beatles’, ‘Hard Day’s Night’, and ‘Second Album’.

When The Beatles finally cracked America in 1964, they became the first British band to do so. The response was so great that they released several albums in the USA, with unique covers that were different to those in the UK.

'Yellow Submarine' - 100T Tanker Wagon

The ‘Yellow Submarine’ is a recurring subject throughout the Hornby range, as you’ll see later in this blog post. This 100T Tanker Wagon takes the fantasy comedy film and displays it in a vibrant livery that will turn heads!

The start of a model railway rock phenomenon

When we first released our Eurostar ‘Yellow Submarine’ Train Set in 2020, it was a response to the colourful real-life train that celebrated the iconic rock band. The original Eurostar was transformed in 1999 to mark the release of the remixed music track and remastered version of the film.

The Hornby train set featured a Eurostar Class 373 Power Driving Car, a Eurostar Class 373 Dummy Driving Car and two Eurostar Class 373 Passenger Saloons with non-working pantographs. It came with all the track and controls needed to get the train up and running.

The 2020 catalogue also included the Eurostar Class 373/1, Set 30053006 ‘Yellow Submarine’ Train Pack and the Eurostar Class 373/1 ‘Yellow Submarine’ Divisible Centre Saloons Coach Pack, so collectors could build the full Eurostar rake.

These models were incredibly popular, adored by fans of the Fab Four and model railway enthusiasts alike.

The legacy lives on

The train set was part of the Hornby range for the next two years, with new wagons added to the mix each year.

In 2021, for example, we released:

• The Beatles ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ Wagon,
• The Beatles ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ Wagon,
• The Beatles ‘Yellow Submarine’ Wagon.  

Then in 2022, we expanded the range with:

• The Beatles ‘Beatles for Sale’ Wagon,
• The Beatles ‘Rubber Soul’ Wagon,
• The Beatles ‘Revolver’ Wagon,
• The Beatles ‘Let It Be’ Wagon.

By 2023, the train set had dropped out of the range, but we replaced it with ‘The Liverpool Connection’ EP Collection Train Pack Side A. We also added five new wagons, including:

• The Beatles ‘1962 – 66’ & ‘1967 – 70’ Wagon
• The Beatles ‘Please, Please Me' & ‘With The Beatles’ Wagon
• The Beatles ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ Wagon
• The Beatles ‘Abbey Road’ Wagon
• The Beatles ‘The Beatles (White Album)’ Wagon

And finally, in 2024, we added ‘The Liverpool Connection’ EP Collection Train Pack Side B. We also added The Beatles 0-6-0T Locomotive, so collectors had something to pull all those wagons with!
