On 3rd July the National Railway Museum, York will be celebrating two major events. The first being "Mallard 75" which celebrates 75 years since "Mallard" achieved the World Speed record for Steam Traction, a record that it still holds today, while the second major event is the coming together of the last remaining six Class A4 locomotives under the aptly named title "The Great Gathering".
The six remaining A4 locomotives are "Mallard", a major resident at the NRM, "Dominion of Canada" kindly on loan from the Canadian Railway Museum, "Dwight D. Eisenhower" also on loan but this time from the National Railroad Museum, USA, together with "Union of South Africa", "Bittern" and "Sir Nigel Gresley" all in private ownership as well as being revenue earners. All will be on show from 3rd July in the Main Hall at the NRM for two weeks. After that date they will be seen together again in October and then finally at Locomotion, Shildon in February 2014 before the two A4s from the North American continent have to return to their respective museums.

Speaking about the headline sponsorship, Hornby’s Executive Chairman, Roger Canham said, “With our layouts and locomotives in miniature we already fulfil the dreams of model railway lovers, now with this sponsorship we are giving our support to an event which will fulfil the dreams of rail fans across the globe. We already know that interest in Mallard 75 and July’s "Great Gathering" is immense – our set of six A4s was completely spoken for soon as this amazing Hornby Collection in association with the National Railway Museum was announced.”
