When you’ve been building model railway products for over 120 years, it’s inevitable that new ranges will emerge, others will fade, and some will grow beyond all expectations.
With so much variety, it can be confusing, especially if you’re new to the hobby. So, let’s break down all our current ranges so you can decide which one might be best for you, no matter where you are on your model railway journey.
The result of a merger between Tri-ang and, at the time, a lesser-known model railway company called Hornby, this brand was first established back in 1964 and was actually named Tri-ang Hornby.
Tri-ang had already been trading from the Margate headquarters for almost ten years. It has been the home of Hornby ever since the merger (with a brief move to an alternative location somewhere in there, but we don’t talk about that!)

The focus of the newly formed brand was to create plastic-bodied, affordable train sets and this was the start of an incredibly profitable time for the business. The company rebranded in 1972, but nostalgic collectors still yearn for the days of Tri-ang Hornby.
Our current Hornby Tri-ang range has been created to fulfil that desire for retro model railways. We’ve recreated some of the most popular train sets of the era, so you can relive your youth through your hobby.

Like Tri-ang, the Dublo range taps into that irrepressible sense of nostalgia that you get from remembering the joy of your past. But our modern Dublo models are based on even older designs, potentially appealing to a different audience.
Hornby Dublo was the focus for the brand back in 1938, producing some iconic models and paving the way for the hobby we all know and love today. At the time, the company was owned by Meccano and the Dublo brand stayed until the Tri-ang takeover.

Today’s re-releases of these models retain the die-cast metal construction of the originals, making them heavy and detailed designs. Ideal for collectors, these are vintage models with a premium quality suitable for modern railway layouts.
The main differences between Dublo and Tri-ang are the period focus (Dublo looks at earlier designs than Tri-ang) and the quality. Dublo has added a premium level to old models, while Tri-ang aims to retain the original charm that you all love and remember.

Hornby RailRoad offers an affordable introduction to the model railway hobby. It’s perfect for children who are too old for “toy” trains but not quite ready for the delicate models of the main range, and just as appealing to adult beginners.

With a huge range of models to choose from, RailRoad comprises locomotives, wagons and coaches that will inspire your model railway layouts. There are a few compromises on detail, but these models are more durable than others, making them ideal for heavier hands and the most active layouts.
Most of our train sets use RailRoad models in them, as they are generally considered as the perfect starting point for a model railway hobby.
The RailRoad Plus range sits somewhere between RailRoad and the main range. Featuring the same durable bodies, the models have more detail, making them perfect for the more discerning train fan.
Added detail on RailRoad Plus models include warning flashes and data panels on modern era locomotives, and full detail banding and lining on steam engines. Most locomotives also have etched name plates.

Designed for the smallest model railway fans, these train sets and models are aimed at children aged 5+. They are brightly coloured, easy to set up and perfect for imaginative play.

There’s no complicated wiring or assembly and the models are the most durable in our catalogue. The track simply clips together so children can start playing right away.

Hornby’s most detailed, innovative and accurate locomotives and rolling stock have a huge focus on technology and engineering. Look out for fine detail like pipes and handrails.
These models are generally set up for digital control and it’s where we introduce new technologies like our steam generator. It’s the most exciting place to be for a modern modeller, but the intricate designs need to be well-cared for to get the best from them and so are best for more experienced hobbyists.

The main range is split into two gauges: OO gauge and TT:120. OO is our traditional gauge that all our other ranges are compatible with (except Playtrains). TT:120, however, is designed for those who want to model on a smaller scale, perhaps because of space restraints or convenience.
There really is something for everyone at Hornby, whether you’re just starting out, you’ve been modelling for years, or you’re a collector of heritage-inspired masterpieces. Hopefully, this comparison of the various Hornby product lines has helped you to decide which products are right for your hobby.
