History:
One of 327 ‘Black Fives’ to be built by Armstrong Whitworth under contract for the LMS, No. 5446 entered traffic in December 1937. Its BR career as No. 45446 was spent based at Aston (Birmingham), Crewe (both North and South sheds) and Stoke-on-Trent, with withdrawal coming at Crewe South in February 1967, 18 months before the end of steam on BR.
The Stanier-designed ‘5MTs’ were among the most numerous locomotive classes to be built, with 842 examples completed between 1934 and 1951. The model has the later BR crest on the tender.
