Hornby Margate Layout

2024 marks the 70^th anniversary since the Margate factory was built by Rovex Scale Models Ltd in 1954. As part of our celebrations surrounding the 70^th anniversary of Hornby being based at the old Margate factory, we created a brand-new ‘00’ layout showcasing the local area with its iconic landmarks. The layout is currently displayed at Margate Station for all to admire!

Don, our resident Model Maker, worked alongside Sussex Modelmakers and the Hornby team to create a layout resembling our local area, Margate. We started with creating a track plan of a somewhat-oval layout that combines 2nd and 3rd radius curves with flexitrack to depict a triple platform station and siding. Whilst laying down track on the baseboard, a plan for Margate Station was also drawn up.

Whilst the layout is consistently running, we have not connected the sidings. These will be added later.

Once the track was laid down, it was time to get to business with the scenics, starting with the Hornby Office Building (R7395) of course! We then added some Skaledale trees.

We have Peter from Sussex Model Makers to thank for the incredible buildings that are recognised around Margate. The Art Deco building that used to house the Dreamland Cinema has been represented on the layout and modelled after the site was used as a filming location for Empire of Light in 2022. The Scenic Railway rollercoaster and Scenic Stage at the heart of Dreamland can also be seen on the layout.

The first place that many visitors to Margate will see is the booking hall of Margate Station, so it is quite fitting to have the station in a prominent position on our layout.

Designed to reflect the charm and character of Margate, from idyllic countryside views to popular attractions, the completed layout includes many well-known local landmarks.

Visit the finished layout for yourself in Margate Station and check out the Hornby site, Margate railway station, Dreamland’s Scenic Stage and Railway, the clock tower and Margate’s beach. We’ve even incorporated the famous Jolly Boys outing coach from the sitcom Only Fools and Horses!
