

This Train Terminal examines the first shots of the Class 50 diesel locomotives and some exciting new TT:120 wagon decoration samples. You'll also see the engineering samples of the TTA Tanker wagon and the Class 50 and 66 renders.
English Electric constructed the Class 50 locomotives in 1967 and 1968, with an output of fifty prototypes. They were one of the last purpose=designed mixed traffic locomotives built at the Vulcan Foundry in Newton-le-Willows. All fifty prototypes were numbered D400 – D449, known as English Electric Type 4s. Railway enthusiasts nicknamed them ‘Hoovers’ because of the noise of the inertial air filters.

When they first rolled onto Britain's railways, the Class 50s hauled express passenger trains on the West Coast Main Line (WCML), one of Europe's busiest mixed-traffic railway routes. They were usually double-headed for passenger train duties between Crewe and Glasgow. Read more...
